Sammy Dowd is a 13-year old, who finds that being the new kid in Puerto Rico high school isn't as welcoming as he had hoped. With big hair and a girl's name, he is the easiest of targets for bullies and even teachers. Sammy meets the girl of his dreams, but he is quickly convinced that she will never go out with him. Until he meets Miguel, the Puerto Rican wrestling mask-wearing school janitor. The two become friends after a rocky start and Miguel (who is also a DJ), helps young Sammy create a mix tape with subliminal messages, using old military techniques. Miguel assures Sammy that this will make his dream girl fall in love with him instantly. However, he fails to warn him of the consequences. Once the tape makes its way around, the entire school is in love with Sammy except for a few students who threaten to expose his big secret at a school talent show. Now, Sammy must make things right in route to proving that being yourself is always the best bet.
